Ethiopia
is the only African country that is never colonized by the European colonial
forces. This
enables Ethiopia to have a unique and ancient culture that is one of the most
friendly, welcoming, and hospitable in the world. Ethiopians have a religious
mandate to help foreigners when they are lost for direction and they also take
it as an honor. Ethiopia is one of the
oldest countries in the world; founded in 980 B.C. Ethiopia is often referred to as the "Land
of Origins”. The reason behind this is that it
is the country where the first human
skeleton, over 3.2 million years old, was found. This skeleton is called
"Lucy" or "Deniknesh" in Amharic. This skeleton is kept in
a museum and is visited by millions of tourists every year.
Ethiopia is the home of “Dallol” (in the Danakil depression), the hottest, lowest and driest place on earth. After Armenia, Ethiopia is the second oldest Christian country in the world. “Lava”, the longest lake in the world, and “Ertale”, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, are located in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a country with many unique tourist attractions and it is the country with the most tourist attractions in Africa, namely 11 tangible and 2 intangible cultural heritage sites; a total of 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the two most breathtaking and colorful festivals: “Timiket” (Epiphany) and “Meskel” (Finding the True Cross).
Ethiopia is a country with its own 13 month calendar. The 12
months have 30 days each, and the 13th month has 5 days in a regular year, and
once in four years, it has 6 days in a
leap year. As a result, the Ethiopian calendar is 7 years and 8 months behind
the rest of the world. Ethiopia is the only country in the world that uses a
12-hour clock. They are calculated
using sunrise and sunset. When the sun rises, it is counted as 1 pm and when
the sun sets, it ends at 12 pm. Then it starts at 1:00 PM and ends at 12:00 AM. Ethiopia's capital
city, Addis Ababa, is the largest and safest city in Africa. Ethiopia is the
only African country that has its own alphabet, letters, and numbers.
This
alphabet is called “Geez” and is one of the oldest in the world. Also, do you
know that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee (i.e. discovered by Ethiopian
goat herder)?
You see, Ethiopia is a tourist destination like none other in the world — an eye-opening place with ancient, incredible, unique, and enchanting history and culture where visiting would be being in the past and present at the same time.
Can't wait to see you here in Ethiopia!
